It's located in the south-east of Austria and famous for its apples and pumpkins. Pumpkin seed oil originated in Styria, but is now known and loved all over Austria. It's dark brown-green in color and rich and delicious in taste.

Whenever you read "Styrian salad" on an Austrian menu, it's prepared with pumpkin seed oil.

3 table spoons vegetable oil (I usually use rapeseed oil)

3 table spoons pumpkin seed oil

3 table spoons brandy vinegar

3 table spoons pumpkin seeds

salt

black pepper

Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin slices. Fold the potatoes in the marinade and let it sit for a couple of minutes to cool down as much you like. Traditionally Austrian potato salad is served warm, but it's also delicious when it's cold. If necessary, add some more salt and pepper.

Hutspot is a traditional Dutch dish, that everyone in the Netherlands knows. It's simple to prepare, very filling and delicious as both a side dish or a main course - real comfort food.
Prep and cook time: 30 min
For 4 servings as a side dish or 2 servings as a main course:

500 grams potatoes

300 grams carrots

1 large white or yellow onion

500 millilitre vegetable stock *)

3 table spoons vegetable oil

1/2 tea spoon dried dill

salt

black pepper

Peel and cut the potatoes, carrots and onion into pieces. Heat vegetable stock with dill in a large pot, add the cut vegetables and cook until they are soft.

Mash the vegetables and the vegetable stock with a potato masher. Add vegetable oil and as much salt and pepper as you like. Stir well.

*) I like my hutspot rather soft and creamy, if you want a firmer hutspot, use 350 to 400 millilitres of vegetable stock.
Enjoy your meal & eet smakelijk,
Usually dashi is made using konbu seaweed and bonito fish blakes, but I'm not a big fan of fish, so I usually make vegan dashi using konbu seasweed and dried shiitake mushrooms. Of course, this is not the original - but it tastes delicious and goes really well with any kind of Japanese dish.

I usually prepare 2,5 litres of dashi at once and freeze it in ice cube forms. You can store it up to 6 months in the freezer.

My camera's working again, and therefore I can continue blogging. And I just picked up my first Glossy Box ever from the post office. A couple of weeks ago I decided that 2012 will be a glamurous year and so I subscribed to the Glossy Box. This is the Austrian January/Valentine's Day box.

This is what the box looked like when I picked it up from the post office. Lovely, isnt't it?

So hat die Box ausgesehen, als ich sie auf der Post in Empfang genommen habe. Hübsch, oder?

I finally made it to the products! In my box are: CLINIQUE High Impact Mascara (a beautiful black mascara), KÉRASTASE Elexir Ultime (a "hair-oil" that's supposed to give you beautiful hair), KIEHL'S Ultra Facial Moisturizer (a moisturizer for the face that also protects you from UVB light), LANCÔME Génifique (an anti-aging serum - Hello, I'm 28!) and STYX Orange & Tangerine Body Lotion (I think that anything by the Austrian natural cosmeticy company STYX is great).

I bought a relly nice nail polish today at BIPA. It's a really pretty nude color by GOSH cosmetics that's called 595 Miss Sweety.

It is my first GOSH nail polish and I was really curious about it, at it was not exactly expensive (€ 8.49) and it turned out to be a really positive surprise. It's really opaque, the brush has a good quality, the color is perfect and it dries really fast.

Nude tones are perfect for black and white nail stickers, so I tried a couple of different ones. Which one do you like the best?

I used the following products:

Nude nail polish: GOSH 595 Miss Sweety

Clear top coat: essence quick dry topcoat

Stickers: Blue Elf Beautynail and Pro Art

And here's how to do it:

Apply nude nail polish twice, let it dry really well.

Stick the stickers to your nails.

Apply a layer of top coat.

Yours,

Sharmûlah or Chermoula (in Arabic: شرمولة) is a kind of marinade used with fish, seafood and meat. There are many versions of this marinade, but there is alwaysfresh herbs, olive oil, garlic and lemon juice in it.

This version is prepared with orange juice, orange blossom water and green pepper. It's great with chicken or vegetables, such as slices of zucchini or eggplant, eiter for a tajine or a BBQ.

Yeah, I know it's winter. But there's nothing like a little bit of Summer feeling when it's snowing outside.

Youghurt soups are popular all over the Middle East and Turkey. This recipe comes from a friend of mine, who lives in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Originally this kind of soups (and many others) is made with frîka, but this is really hard to get here in Austria. So I tried to use dried unripe spelt grain (German: Grünkern) instead - and it worked perfecty. It does taste different to frîka, but both taste good in this soup.

Shakshûka is a dish Tunisian origins, that is now a staple of Tunisian, Algerian, and Moroccan cuisines, and is also popular in Israel. It's originally hot or very hot with chilies in the tomato sauce, but for breakfast I prefer a milder version.

By the way, it's not only great for breakfast or brunsh, but whenever you want a good, healthy & fast meal.

Minestrone is a very popular Italian vegetable and pasta soup. There are as many recipes for Minestrone as there are Italians. This version is really fast and easy to prepare. I usually cook this soup after a long day of work when I don't feel like spending a long time in the kitchen.

I'm lazy today, slept long, and plan do to kind of nothing today. I just want to relax, have a cup of tea and read a good book - and that's what I'm doing right now.

I decided on some black tea (Twinings English Breakfast), cooked with a cinnamon stick and some honey.

Vandaag ben ik lui.

I found the basis for this recipe in the little cookbook "Cooking of the Gulf" and changed it a little to better suit my taste (more! saffron!!). In Arabic it is called Ruz Buhârî (رز بخاري), which means "Rice from Bukhara". This is a very typical Saudi Arabian dish and a staple for any Saudi. Other versions of this dish are popular everywhere in the middle east.

I really like Ruz Buhârî, it's easy to prepare and tastes delicious sweet&sour and has a slightly decadent taste because of all the spices and especcialy the saffron.

For 3-4 Servings

1 cup basmati rice

150 g minced beef

1/2 teaspoon saffron threads

1/2 teaspoon baharât

1 tablespoon rose water

4 table spoons almond silvers

3 table spoons pistachio

2 table spoons butter (for a kosher or lactose free version: use olive oil)

3 table spoons raisins

salt

black pepper

Place rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold water until water is clear. Cook rice in water until "al dente" and drain it.

In a frying pan over medium heat, heat to butter and fry the meat until browned. Add baharât and rice. Dissolve the saffron seeds in 1/2 cup of water, add it to the rice. Add rose water, 2 table spoons almonds silvers, pistachios and raisins and fry for 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, sprinke 2 table spoons almond sivers over it.

In Arabic this dish is called aruz bi-halîb (أرز بحليب), which means "rice with milk". In Saudi Arabia this dish is prepared using Basmati rice, but I usually use whole grain brown rice. I think it tastes great with this recipe.

Actually, "shurba" means just "soup", but when people talk about "shurba", they almost always talk about this kind of soup. There's a different recipe in every country, every region - even in every family - how to prepare it.My version is fast & easy to prepare. You can also add some vermicelli to it.

This soup is traditinally served for iftâr, the evening meal when Muslims break their fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Sorry for not posting for such a long time, December was a hell of a month but things are getting better now. Today I decided to make myself a wellness-and-beauty-evening at home and did my nails. There's no snow in Austria at the moments, but still - it's winter! So I need snowflakes on my nails! I'm also really into pink and purple, so I decided to make pink nails with purple glitter.

I followed the instructions of MissChievous' Sparkly Glitter Christmas Nails tutorial - and I think the result wasn't to bad for the first try!

I used the following products:

Pink nail polish: MNY Maybelline New York 261

Clear top coat: essence quick dry topcoat

Purple glitter: De Cortions AD

Snowflake stickers: Blue Elf Beautynail

And here's how to do it:

Apply pink nail polish twice, let it dry really well.

Stick the snowflakes to your nails. Use larger ones on larger nails and smaller ones on smaller nails.

Apply one layer of top coat, let it dry until it's still sticky but no longer wet.

Apply the pink glitter on the tips using a soft eye shadow brush.

Apply another layer of top coat.

Yours,

When I cook chicken Cacciatore, I usually use a very easy yet very delicious recipe I found on the Azerbaijani Cookbook Blog (a great blog by the way, I follow the Azerbaijani site to practice my Azerbaijani and find out about new great recipes - but there's also an English version of the blog. Go there! Read it!).

The original Azerbaijani recipe is:

Ərzaqlar:

Bir ədəd kilo yarımlıq toyuq - tikələrə bölün

1 ədəd iri soğan - 8 yerə bölün

2 ədəd quru dəfnə yarpağı

2 zoğ təzə rozmarin

2 xörək qaşığı kərə yağı - xırda kubiklərə doğrayın

Yarım kilo pomidor (5-7 ədəd) - soyun, ikiyə bölün, iridirlərsə, hər yarını 3-4 yerə bölün

Zövqə görə duz və istiot

Dörtdə bir stəkan zeytun yağı

Hazırlanma Qaydası:

Sobanı 205Cdək qızdırın. Ölçüləri 33 x 22 X 5 sm olan soba istisinə dəyanıqlı tavanı/qabı (mən istiyə dəyanıqlı şüşə qabda bişirirəm).
Buraya əvvəlcə toyuq və soğanı yerləşdirin. Dəfnə yarpağı və rozmarini toyuq və soğanın arasında yeləşidrin. Üstünə kərə yağını yerləşdirin. Pomidorları kəsilmiş tərəfi aşağıda olmaq şərtilə toyuğun ətrafında şəkildə gördüyünüz kimi düznü. Toyuğun üstünə zeytun yağı tökün. Duz və istiotlayın. Yeməyi sobada toyuğun üstü bir az qızarana və yeməyin suyu çıxanadək bişirin, təxminən bir saat yarım ərzində.

But this time, things are slightly different I had some stomach problems during the last days and didn't feel well at all, so I decided to prepare chicken Cacciatore using no oil or other fat and using whatever I had at home. I really didn't feel like going shopping. So this isn't really Cacciatore, but it's still really good! My changed version of Chicken Cacctiatore is:
